Battle of the sexes (BOTS)

Partner: Required

Lead: Same gender as follow

Follow: Same gender as lead

Switch lead/follow: Allowed

In this category, each couple is made up of two dancers of the same gender. Either partner can be the lead or the follow and the lead may swap between either partner during the dance. Dancers battle it out to see whether an all-female or all-male couple will be the winners.

X-Factor

Partner: Required

Lead: Any gender

Follow: Any gender

Switch lead/follow: Not allowed

In this category, you have eight beginner moves. You will be judged on what you can do with those moves in terms of creativity and musicality. If you dance a move not on the list you will be disqualified. If one couple keeps to one or two moves to be safe and another couple dancing a similar standard are dancing more moves, more points will be given to the couple dancing more moves. You are allowed any number of spins at any speed. You can do multiple turns and returns at any speed, static or travelling. Manhattans can be turning. Combs can be without a return but right handed only. Moves can be finished part way through. If a move becomes a named move not on the x-factor list, the move will be disallowed and you may be disqualified.

2. Breakthru
3. New Yorker

5. First Move
6. Loopthru

8. Comb

Infinity

Partner: Required
Lead: Any gender
Follow: Any gender
Switch lead/follow: Not allowed

There’s just one rule – don’t let go! Start in a two-handed hold, any type you like, but once the music starts you must not let go of your partners hands. If you do accidently let go, then it is good sportsmanship to leave the dance floor.

Music Mashup

Partner: Required

Lead: Any gender

Follow: Any gender

Switch lead/follow: Not allowed

This category is less about the moves and more about how they are styled to the music. We’ll play about two and a half minutes of music comprised of 4 to 5 different song clips, each lasting roughly between 30 and 40 seconds. Genre, tempo and mood will vary between each clip. We’re looking for the dancers that clearly distinguish the changes in music through their dance.

Lucky Dip

Partner: Not required

Lead: Male

Follow: Female

Switch lead/follow: Not allowed

Dancers enter this category on their own and on the day before the competition we will randomly pair you up with another dancer who will be your partner for the entire event. Unfortunately with Lucky Dip we cannot accommodate surplus ladies (or men). Those who apply for Lucky Dip are taken on a first paid first served basis. This year we will pool names into different groups based on level and region before randomly assigning partners to increase the likelihood that you a paired with someone from a different level and region.
